Navajo Rugs

Navajo rugs are known all over the world for their beauty and specific craft work. The history of their weaving reflects the history of Navajo people themselves. Navajo learned to weave from their Pueblo Indian neihgbours, but then their art progressed further more then their teachers`. Navajo started using vegetable dyes to make brightly blankets which were traded as goods to the chiefs of the other tribes.

Being very rare now original Navajo rugs are very valuable collectibles. At the second part of 19th century, Navajo were hunted down by the US Army. As a result, under the influence of Anglo traders Navajo rugs weaving changed.

They started making heavier rugs with borders around the edge. Artificial dyes got into use to make the colours brighter. By the end of the 19th century the quality of Navajo rugs declined till recent years when the weavers returned to their traditional art.
